The History of Friendship Bracelets

Friendship bracelets are handmade bracelets given as a gift to a special friend. Typically they are made from several strands of embroidery thread that have been entwined to make an intricate pattern. The knotting is a form of macramé; this uses knotting instead of weaving or knitting.

The making of friendship bracelets originates from Central America and was first seen in the USA in early 1970’s. It is tradition is to wear the bracelet until the threads wear down and fall off naturally to honour the hard work that was put into making it.

The friendship bracelet fashion has evolved and is now associated with not only the original woven threads from the USA; but incorporates European and far eastern threading techniques.  Patterns for more complex friendship bracelets are made from various different materials and many other contemporary styles introduce charms, symbols and mixed uses of crystals, gold, silver and precious stones to make a bracelet that is more out of the ordinary.
